From the trailhead at 3,307m off Blue Lakes Road the trail climbs through spruce forest to treeline (~3,630m), then follows the broad east ridge in one long, honest grind: a flatter shoulder near 4,010m (the false summit that fools everyone), then 340m of steep rock-strewn ridge to the 4,350m summit, with the resident mountain-goat herd usually posing along the way. No scrambling, but full alpine exposure to weather — the same be-off-by-noon lightning rule applies. Parking is the crux: summer trailhead reservations or the free Breckenridge shuttle.
Safety classification
Summer, roughly mid-June through mid-September. In summer, trailhead access is by parking reservation or Breckenridge shuttle only (2026 window: Jun 13–Sep 13 via hikequandary.com); roadside parking is prohibited. October–May the route is snow-covered — winter conditions, avalanche forecast published by the forest — and is a different, serious undertaking. Even in summer, afternoon thunderstorms make a pre-dawn start and pre-noon summit the safe pattern.
