The sentence this article is built around

The Swiss Alpine Club publishes ten safety recommendations for mountaineering, then says this about them: "However, they can't replace training courses, which provide a solid base and help you expand your competences and improve your technique with qualified instructors." On the exact skills this article is about, it is blunter: "Using your crampons and ice axe properly requires lots of practice."

A national alpine club is saying that its own written guidance is not enough, and that is our position too. New Zealand's Mountain Safety Council states it directly — "Formal, hands-on training from an accredited course provider is essential for safe alpine travel" — and names the skills that need it: "fitting and using crampons; stopping a slide with an ice axe, called 'self-arrest'… travelling safely on steep terrain". The Austrian Alpine Club uses two words: "Lass dich ausbilden!" — get trained. Mountaineering Scotland says these skills are "better demonstrated than described", and that "it is no use having all the kit if you have no idea how to use it!"

So this guide covers selection and timing: what to carry, what the labels mean, when the ground demands them. It does not teach technique; the last section says where to learn it.

Nothing, microspikes, or crampons

The decision comes before the shopping list. Mountaineering Scotland draws the line by angle and by consequence: microspikes are "designed for walking on icy paths and tracks with low-angle inclines, typically 15–20 degrees", and are "unsuitable for steep or technical terrain where a slip could lead to a serious fall". Their rule: "Micro spikes are ideal for icy paths; crampons are essential for steeper, more technical mountain terrain where a slip could result in serious consequences." New Zealand's MSC draws the same line independently: rigid boots with compatible crampons, a helmet and an ice axe in "serious alpine terrain", while microspikes "may be sufficient" on a well-defined track with compacted snow or thin ice.

Then the field test, which needs no instrument: "Wear crampons whenever your boots don't create steps in the snow easily", and put them on "before getting onto ground where you would be insecure without them" — having carried them "when there is snow on the hills, even if you think you may not need to use them". Snow hard enough to refuse a boot-step is the threshold; the mistake is deciding once you are already standing on it. Mountaineering Scotland states that around one quarter of mountain rescue incidents result directly from a slip in the wrong place — a figure their page carries with no citation or date, so read it as the national body's statement, not as a measured statistic.

The rating system nobody owns

Every shop, and both UK national bodies, sort boots B0–B3 and crampons C1–C3. We went looking for the standard behind it. There isn't one.

EN 893 is the European crampon standard, harmonised under PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425. UIAA 153 (Crampons, V3, 2022) contains no compatibility categories at all: its whole requirement set is that "The UIAA Label can only be granted for crampons which meet all the requirements of EN 893:2019", plus one clause on snow balling. Neither EN 893's published scope nor UIAA 153 mentions C1/C2/C3, B0–B3 or any boot-stiffness taxonomy.

The national bodies never quite claim otherwise. Mountaineering Scotland writes in agentless passive voice — "a rating system has been established, and all good outdoor retailers will use this system" — while the BMC routes the decision to shop staff, and in the same article names the governing standard for axes ("The CEN standard for ice tools is EN13089"). That contrast is the evidence. It is a retail-trade convention the clubs have adopted, not an ISO, EN or UIAA standard. (Stated honestly: we read UIAA 153's full requirements text; EN 893's normative text is paywalled, so we read only its published scope.)

It is still the vocabulary you will be sold in: C1 flexible crampons with B1 boots, C2 articulated with B2, C3 rigid and "designed for use on steep ice" with B3 — flexible with flexible, rigid with rigid. The line to memorise is B0, because it is the failure mode: on a flexible three-season walking boot, "Use of crampons is not recommended as the boot does not provide a sufficiently stable platform, leading to the danger of the crampon becoming detached in use."

Anti-balling plates: the one thing the UIAA added

UIAA 153's single addition to EN 893 is a warning requirement: manufacturers "shall draw attention to the dangers of snow balling up under the crampons when used in snow and shall advise the user how to reduce the risk." Of everything a crampon can do wrong, that is the hazard the UIAA judged EN 893 had not covered. Mountaineering Scotland gives the mechanism and the fix: snow "will also tend to 'ball up' under your foot if your crampons are not fitted with anti-balling plates. This balling up gives real potential for a slip… We strongly recommend you use them." Note the asymmetry, because it decides your purchase: the UIAA mandates the warning; nobody mandates the plates.

The axe that looks most capable is the one least able to stop you

This is the most useful selection fact in the subject, and it runs against every instinct in a shop.

Mountaineering Scotland sorts the field three ways — walking axes, mountaineering axes, technical climbing tools — and warns against reading the difference as fashion: "It's not just a matter of taste: each is a carefully designed tool for a specific job and the choice you make is important."

The BMC states the consequence across that range. Walking axe: "The ideal pick shape is gently curved for a smooth self arrest." Mountaineering axe: "A more steeply curved pick… makes self arrest quite tricky so take care." Technical tool: with reverse curve or "banana" picks, "self arresting becomes even more difficult" — hence its advice to walkers to "certainly avoid the technical banana shaped axes that are designed for ice climbing." Buy for the terrain, not for the photograph.

An honesty note in both directions: this shows that arrest capability varies with the tool. No official statement and no accident dataset we could find quantifies how often self-arrest fails on hard névé or steep ice — so we will not tell you it "usually works", and we will not tell you it "often fails".

The marking to look for is EN 13089, whose two categories are based on shaft and pick strength and which "should be clearly marked on the shaft of the tool". Type 1 is the walking and mountaineering axe, "suitable for glacier travel, ski mountaineering and winter walking"; Type 2 covers "Technical tools with a higher strength pick and shaft", and a Type 1 tool "would not be sufficient for hard mixed climbing and could be dangerous". The ratings "apply separately to the shaft and pick of the axe", so check both. Two deliberate omissions: no edition year, because BSI, the European Commission and the UIAA print three different ones; and no legacy letter grades, because the single source that lists them gives an order no independent source confirms.

Length is the one figure two national bodies agree on: "most people opt for a walking axe 55-65cm in length" — with the trade-off stated honestly, since a long shaft adds stability on snow and ice but, for arrest, "A shorter shaft makes this easier, so a compromise has to be made."

Helmets: the standard on the sticker is probably out of date

If a product page tells you a helmet is "certified to EN 12492:2012", that page is stale. The European Commission's harmonised-standards list now carries EN 12492:2025 alongside the 2012 edition, which has a date of withdrawal of 16.12.2027; BSI independently lists BS EN 12492:2012 as "Withdrawn (16 Oct 2025)".

What the standard tests is broader than people assume: as referenced normatively by UIAA 106 (4th edition), it runs a crown impact test and off-crown front, side and rear impact tests — four directions, not just the top — with the UIAA setting a stricter pass threshold than CEN, "shall not exceed 8 kN".

The effect size comes from a 13-year national registry. A study of the Austrian National Registry of Mountain Accidents covering rock climbing from 2005 to 2018 — 2,992 incidents, 1,217 acute traumatic injuries — found falls "frequently preceded by rockfall", head injuries in 56 of 140 fatal cases, and that "Severe or fatal injuries were more probable when not wearing a helmet (OR 1.81; CI 1.35–2.43)." That is rock climbing, not glacier mountaineering, so read it as evidence about rockfall terrain. A 2022 systematic review of alpine summer sports words its conclusion carefully, and we will not upgrade it: "A helmet seems to decrease the likelihood of face and head injuries in mountain sports and be a meaningful preventive measurement." On via ferrata the German Alpine Club leaves no room at all: "Am Klettersteig nur mit Helm!"

What this article does not teach, and where to learn it

We publish no text instruction on self-arrest, on crampon footwork, or on roping up, glacier travel and crevasse rescue. That is not caution for its own sake: the SAC says a party heading onto snowy or icy slopes and rocky ridges "must master belaying and rescue techniques", and warns that being roped on a steep slope carries its own risk of being dragged down; the ÖAV calls regular practice of rope and crevasse-rescue technique "unerlässlich", indispensable. None of that is transmissible in prose.

Mountaineering Scotland publishes an anonymised near miss that makes the point better than an argument does. A solo walker who declined crampons on a 45-degree icy slope above "a vertical drop of 50 metres on to an area of boulders" slipped — and "the training from the Winter Skills course at Glenmore Lodge kicked in, and I was able to arrest myself using the axe with less than 10 metres to spare". One anecdote is not a statistic; the national body publishes it as a teaching case.

Where to get the skills: the clubs and national bodies behind every quote above run or list the courses — Mountaineering Scotland's winter skills courses, the SAC's training programme, the ÖAV's Eis- und Hochtourenkurse, NZ MSC's accredited providers. Mountaineering Scotland adds a caution that belongs here too: "Avoid relying solely on social media for advice and seek trusted sources of information." North American park agencies, on the pages we reviewed, phrase all of this as expectation rather than requirement — Denali "expects teams to be self-sufficient" — and mandate no course and no guide. The absence of a rule is not evidence that you are ready.
