The night climb
You wake at two in the morning and leave the refuge at three. This page runs that clock, and the mountain under it is lit by the hour you are reading.

The gate
Rangers can turn you back
Registration at the Tromen station is mandatory before anyone starts up. Rangers check equipment, give the weather briefing, hold you to a return time, and can close the route.

The refuges
Three huts, painted so you can name them
- CAJARefugio Amarillo. Corrugated metal, about six places. No water above it until snowmelt.2,400 m
- RIMRefugio Rojo. The traditional base camp for a summit bid.2,600 m
- BIMRefugio Naranja. The last shelter before the exposed upper mountain.2,700 m
Our two sources disagree about these heights by as much as 300 m: the route map lists CAJA at 2,400 m and BIM at 2,700 m, while operator GPS logs put BIM near 2,300 m and CAJA near 2,600 m. The army staffs the high refuge from November to March and sees 20 to 30 civilian climbers a week, which is the practical window for a first ascent of this mountain. Argentina.gob.ar, Los custodios del Lanín, via lanin-research.md 1.7

Leaving CAJA the ground is ice and frozen snow from the doorway. The angle rises steadily to about 45 degrees.
Above the huts the mountain is volcanic scree and wind, and the route is marked by reflective stakes above 2,800 m. Ascenso Lanín and SEGEMAR, via lanin-research.md 1.4 and 1.7
La Canaleta del Silencio
The crux, and the reason for three in the morning
Between roughly 3,000 and 3,500 m the Canaleta runs at 40 to 45 degrees. It is the most exposed ground on the route, and it finishes through ice towers under the summit.

Rockfall here is driven by weather rather than by the volcano. It runs hardest in the warm season, concentrates above 3,000 m and especially in this gully, and moves at over 100 km per hour. The season the park recommends is the season the rock moves most, and a 03:00 departure puts the climbing hours before the day warms.

Ten in the morning, 3,776 m
Parties leave the refuge at three and are on top around ten. On a clear day the view runs across the Argentine lake district and into Chile.
The crater rim is often in whiteout, because the volcano makes its own weather. Navigation by GPS or compass matters above 3,600 m. src/data/lanin-map.ts, crater rim and summit waypoints
You do not stay up there
The descent is the way you came, and parties are back at the base in the evening. Four climbers to one guide is the ratio the park works to, so four is the group.
