Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a mile deep and two hundred and seventy-seven river miles long. Limestone at the rim was laid down 230 million years ago; the schist down at the river is nearly 1.8 billion years old. The Bright Angel trail takes you down through most of the history of the Earth, and it is the most heavily engineered backcountry in the American park system — signed, patrolled, water in season.
