On a mountain, danger rises with altitude. The exposure, the cold, the rockfall, the thin air β€” all of it gets worse the higher and harder you push. Yellowstone runs the opposite way. Here the ground that kills you is flat, developed, and often within sight of a car. The water that scalds is a short step off a boardwalk. The animal that gores you is standing on the road. Thermal ground: the crust is thin and the water is acid
