The most lethal two minutes on Mont Blanc

The Grand Couloir du Gouter — climbers call it "the Bowling Alley" or, without euphemism, "the Death Couloir" — is a stone chute crossed at roughly 3,270 m on Mont Blanc's normal route, between the Tete Rousse hut and the start of the Gouter ridge. The exposed crossing itself takes between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. That is the entire commitment: under two minutes of exposure, on a route graded PD, the easiest line up the highest mountain in western Europe.

It is also the single most lethal spot on the mountain.

Note the sector definition: those numbers cover the couloir and the Gouter ridge above it. The dangerous ground does not end when you reach the far side of the chute — the ridge climb to the hut is part of the same rockfall system.


What the seismic sensors recorded

In 2018 and 2019, a research team from the EDYTEM and ISTerre laboratories, led by Jacques Mourey and funded by the Petzl Foundation, instrumented the couloir with seismic sensors sensitive enough to detect falling rock down to roughly 100 kg. The study, published in 2020, replaced decades of anecdote with a measured rockfall clock.

Two findings deserve emphasis. First, the numbers are stark: at peak, the couloir throws a detectable rock every 24 minutes — against a crossing that takes up to 2 minutes, that is not a margin, it is a lottery ticket. Second, and more important: the study found that falls spike when snow melts in the couloir or after rainfall. Heat and wet weather are the triggers. The clock time is a proxy, not a cause.


Why guides cross in the dark anyway

Here is the apparent contradiction. The sensor data says the statistically safest hour is mid-morning, 09:00-10:00, and the worst is early evening. Guide practice — universal, decades old — is to leave Tete Rousse in the dark and cross at the coldest hour of the night.

Both rules are rational, and they are not actually in conflict:

  • The pre-dawn habit minimises exposure to heat-of-day melt across the whole ascent, not just the crossing.
  • The 09:00-10:00 window in the data reflects the overnight refreeze having done its work: by mid-morning the night's cold has locked the loose rock in place, and the day's heat has not yet undone it.

Look closely and the two rules share a single load-bearing assumption: that the night refreezes the couloir. The pre-dawn crossing borrows the refreeze in progress; the mid-morning window collects it after the fact. When nights are cold, either timing works and the argument between them is academic.

When the refreeze does not happen, both rules fail at once. That is not a theoretical scenario. It is what happened in July 2026.


18 July 2026, 02:30

On 18 July 2026, Czech UIAGM guide Pavel Zofka, 57, and his 49-year-old client were killed by rockfall in the Grand Couloir. A third member of the team was injured and evacuated. They had left Tete Rousse in the dark and were struck at approximately 02:30 — the coldest hour of the night, the exact timing that guide doctrine prescribes. Chamonix was in a heatwave.

There is no timing error to point to in this accident. A certified guide applied the textbook rule correctly, at the correct hour, and the rule's hidden premise — an overnight refreeze — was simply absent. After consecutive hot days and warm nights, the couloir at 02:30 is not the frozen chute the rule imagines. It is the same unstable slope it was at 18:00, in the dark.

The professional community read it exactly that way. Two days later, on 20 July 2026, the Courmayeur guide society collectively suspended guiding on the Italian normal route (the Miage/Gonella side). Its president, Alex Campedelli: "With the heat we had in June, conditions deteriorated quickly. It's no longer safe enough to take clients up there." The French side remained formally open through summer 2026 — dismantling works on the old Gouter hut continue without closing the route — with standing advice to cross the couloir before 06:00, treat forecast heatwaves as a no-go or a Trois Monts trigger, and re-check conditions with the Office de Haute Montagne before committing. This is structural, not a bad month

The mechanism, cited consistently across the Mourey study and the accident reporting: thawing permafrost is the "glue" of the upper massif. Heatwaves melt it along with the residual snow, and both couloir rockfall and serac behaviour degrade — day and night. The 2026 season is one entry in a lengthening record:

One consequence of that record: the de facto good window is migrating to the season edges. June and September increasingly carry the best rockfall odds, at the cost of colder, more wintry conditions on the ridges.


The diversion is not free

The standard heat diversion from the Gouter is the Trois Monts route from the Aiguille du Midi. Be clear-eyed about what that trade is:

Diverting a Gouter-grade party onto the Trois Monts because "the couloir is bad" trades a rockfall lottery for a serac lottery one grade above the party's level. It is an alternative for competent parties, not an escape hatch for displaced beginners. Sometimes the honest answer to a bad couloir is not a harder route — it is waiting, or a preparatory objective instead.


Crossing it: what is actually in your control

The crossing itself is short, and the levers are few. From the dossier's sourced material:

  • In normal, refreezing conditions, cross early. The standing 2026 advice on the French side is to be through the couloir before 06:00. Remember the exposure does not end at the far side — the Gouter ridge above is part of the same accident sector.
  • Read the nights, not the days. The sensors are unambiguous: falls spike with snowmelt in the couloir and after rain. A string of hot days with warm nights means no refreeze — and no refreeze means the clock-based rules have nothing to stand on.
  • Ask before committing. Conditions change week to week; check with the Office de Haute Montagne / La Chamoniarde before the attempt, not after the hut booking.
  • Guided ratio is 1:2 maximum on the summit ropes at both the Chamonix and Saint-Gervais bureaus — a guide cannot shepherd a crowd through this crossing, and that ratio is part of why. Sources: Compagnie des Guides; Bureau des Guides du Mont Blanc.

The probability trade, stated plainly

Timing the Grand Couloir was never a safety guarantee. It is a probability trade: you cannot change the couloir, so you choose the minutes when the fall frequency is lowest and keep your exposure inside them. On a cold, refrozen night, that trade is worth making — it is the trade every guide makes at 03:00, and the one the sensors validate at 09:00.

Heat collapses the trade. When the night fails to refreeze, the frequency rises at every hour on the clock, the "safe window" stops existing, and 02:30 buys you nothing except darkness. That is what 18 July 2026 demonstrated, at the cost of two lives, to a rope team doing everything the rulebook asked.

So the rule worth carrying is not an hour. It is this: after refreeze-free nights, no hour is safe — divert to a route within your grade, or wait. The mountain will still be there in September. The window is a tool for good conditions, not a spell against bad ones.
