Passable as a trek roughly Dec–early Apr, once Brecha Negra and Paso Schweizer are snow-free. CAB grades the Frey–Jakob and Jakob–Laguna Negra legs High even in summer and Very High May–Oct: under snow this is a winter mountaineering objective, not a trek — do not attempt May–Oct without full winter skills.

The classic 3-hut line is the core of CAB/APN's '4 Huts' traverse (Catedral–Frey–Jakob–Laguna Negra, exit via Arroyo Goye). APN registro de trekking is mandatory and free, within 48 h of departure (nahuelhuapi.gov.ar or barilochetrekking.com); hut reservations mandatory.
