The Fitz Roy day hike. 20–25km return, ~1,060m cumulative gain. Moderate valley walk for 8km, then a 400m loose-moraine scramble in the final kilometer that substantially exceeds the 'moderate' grading every blog gives it. Since October 2024 this trail has an APN entry fee at three gates. Crowds are severe after 9am in peak season — dawn start is the honest answer.

Season
Safe window October–March (APN names this the trekking season). NOT safe May–September: APN declares trails 'extremadamente complejas' with ice, mud and snow, makes poles and crampons mandatory, and requires visitor-center registration to use any trail. Year-round, do not start on days APN flags strong wind — its trail bulletins mark the Poincenot–Laguna de los Tres section 'no recomendable' in wind.
Hazards
▲Very steep final moraine climb — APN's own trail table: 'Very steep trail. Dangerous when it's windy and rainy'
Violent Patagonian wind; APN closes/deprecates the upper section on windy days
▲Sudden weather change (APN: 'precaución por el cambio del clima repentino')
▲Winter (May–Sep) ice and snow on the trail; crampons and poles mandatory by APN rule
▲Long day: APN states 25 km and 8–9 h total; return to town before dark (no lighting, low/no phone signal)
▲Walking on frozen lagoons is prohibited (unstable ice, hypothermia)
APN rates it 'media-alta' — its hardest trunk day-trail: 25 km round trip, ~750 m gain, 4 h one-way, with the danger concentrated in the final moraine hour above Poincenot. Marked, signposted, daily ranger presence, so no guide and no summer registration needed. Do not go in strong wind or rain (APN's own warning), and do not attempt May–September without crampons, poles and prior registration.
