Hawaii's walking is volcano and sea cliff — Mauna Kea and Haleakalā above, the Nā Pali coast and the Kalalau Trail below. Around the year 1100 Hawaiians climbed to the summit of Mauna Kea to quarry stone, because the basalt up there is denser than anything lower down. They carried up food, water and firewood and built shelters to keep the work going through the cold.
