2026-27 pricing in USD. The mountain itself costs nothing — there is no park fee, no registration charge and no community fee. What costs money is getting there, the vehicle, and, since February 2024, the guide you are legally required to hire.
Reference rate
ARS 1,530 = USD 1 — Banco Nación sell, 8 September 2026. The blue rate that day was 1,545 — a spread under 1%. Carrying USD cash to Varvarco, which has no bank branch, buys you about one percent and adds risk. Pay by card.
Season gate
1 November – 30 April. The Army staffs the El Playón registration post from 15 November to 30 April. The road and the ISSN thermal complex close on 31 March. Outside those dates the post is unstaffed and the trails are unmarked, which means nobody knows you went up and nothing shows you the way down.
Fuel — read this before you drive
There is no service station in Varvarco. The nearest pump is Chos Malal, 120 km away. A YPF station starts construction October–November 2026. Fill in Chos Malal, top up at Andacollo's municipal MAS module if it is stocked, and carry range for the 88 km Varvarco–El Playón round trip plus reserve.

Trip shape
There is no self-guided summit option
Since 17 February 2024 an authorised guide is mandatory for the ascent and solo climbing is prohibited. The province closed the mountain outright for a day, then reopened it under that rule after a SEGEMAR report. The Army registers every party at El Playón. Almost every English-language page still describes Domuyo as free, permit-free and guide-optional — that stopped being true two and a half years ago, so this calculator will not price a trip you are not allowed to make.

The 2.3x language premium
Same mountain, AAGM-certified guides either way. ARS 650,000 from a Neuquén operator, EUR 898 through an international marketplace. There is no AAGM tariff floor on Domuyo — unlike Lanín, where the San Martín delegation sets a USD 450 season minimum — because Domuyo sits outside national-park jurisdiction. The supply side is roughly a dozen individual guides, not an industry.
Mountain nights (3 at base camp, 3,100 m)
Refugio Campo Base Domuyo (Rumbo Norte) is the only mountain accommodation. Minimum 2 nights, minimum 3 people. Published 2026/27 per person: 2 nights ARS 175,000 self-catered / 260,000 half board / 325,000 full board. Water is fetched by guests from a spring. The toilet is dry, and all waste including toilet waste is packed out in a cacatubo you supply — there is no collection. Your party of 2 is below the three-person minimum.
Valley lodging (2 nights)
No published 2026 nightly rate exists for any accommodation in the Domuyo area. Every figure in this section is our assumption, marked as such, and none of it is a quote. Phone the Varvarco municipality before you commit.
Party size (splits the vehicle, the fuel and the transfer)
The vehicle is the expensive part of this trip, which is why a guided ascent costs about the same as self-driving — the guide brings the vehicle.
Getting there (Buenos Aires → Neuquén → El Playón)
The ARS 94,645semicama fare comes from a single aggregator and the operator's own timetable pages return 404. The Chos Malal → Varvarco leg (~ARS 25,000) is a Rome2rio estimate — low confidence. Public transport ends at Varvarco: the last 44 km to El Playón has no scheduled service at all.
Permits and fees
No entrance fee to the 92,000-hectare protected area, no registration charge, no community access fee found. The Army checks your gear and writes your name down. It does not take your money.

On Lanín a foreigner pays 4.4x what a Neuquén resident pays. On Aconcagua the foreigner rate is billed in hard currency at roughly 9x the Mendocino rate. On Domuyo there is no differential because there is no fee at all.
Gear
There is no rental within 450 km. Nothing in Chos Malal, Andacollo, Las Ovejas or Varvarco, and the San Martín de los Andes shops are piste-ski oriented. If you fly in without kit, the guided package is the only way you get crampons, an axe and a helmet.
Insurance
What your policy has to cover
Standard mountain policies cap rescue at 5,000 m and Domuyo at ~4,709 m sits just inside that ceiling. Anything capped at 4,000 m, or excluding mountaineering with technical equipment, will not cover an incident on La Montura. You need mountaineering to 4,709 m, crampon and axe use, helicopter evacuation, remote ground evacuation over 100+ km of unpaved road, and repatriation. Nearest medical facility of any size: Chos Malal, 120 km and three hours of ripio from Varvarco, plus another 44 km to El Playón.

- Valley lodging. No 2026 nightly rate is published for Hostería Varvarco, the Andacollo cabañas or the ISSN cabins at Villa Aguas Calientes. The ISSN cabins are a social-security asset, so member priority is likely but unconfirmed.
- Insurance. No 2026 premium for 4,709 m remote evacuation in Neuquén, at any tier.
- The Chos Malal air fare. The route exists from 14 September 2026 and tickets are on sale. The price is not published.
- Camping fees at Aguas Calientes. ISSN publishes season dates, not rates, and sources disagree on whether public camping exists there.

Food is a proxy derived from INDEC's Canasta Básica Alimentaria (ARS 229,131 per adult equivalent per month, July 2026) multiplied by two to three for a mountain resupply — that is an inference from an official anchor, not a measured basket. Base camp rates are Rumbo Norte's published 2026/27 tariff and are the only lodging figures on this page with a real source. Permits are zero because the protected area charges nothing; that is a positive finding, confirmed against provincial sources, not an absence of research.
