Open 1 April – 31 December, booked only through the park's eRinjani app. Closed every year 1 January – 31 March (2026 closure announced 22 Dec 2025) for extreme-weather risk mitigation and ecosystem recovery — do not plan this trek in Jan–Mar. Dry season (roughly May–October) is the reliable window; August–October brings wildfire risk, and the park can close segments at any time (the Plawangan Sembalun–Segara Anak descent was shut 16 Jul – 11 Aug 2025 for safety works). Check current announcements on rinjaninationalpark.id before booking.
- ▲Fatal exposure on the summit ridge (Cemara Nunggal, 3,726 m): loose volcanic scree above steep drops; a climber died in a fall here in June 2025 (park closed the summit for the SAR operation, reopened 28 Jun 2025) and another was injured on the summit descent 25 May 2026
- ▲Steep, erosion-prone descent from Plawangan Sembalun to Danau Segara Anak — the park closed this segment in July 2025 to install railings, ropes, wire mesh and geobags; treat the fixed aids as essential, not decorative
- ▲Altitude: 3,726 m reached on a fast 2–3 day itinerary — AMS is common; the park now requires proof of prior mountain experience
- ▲Slow rescue: helicopter evacuation is routinely blocked by fog at the Plawangan rims (25 May 2026 casualty waited overnight for ground evacuation)
- ▲Dry-season wildfires: August 2026 saw a ~30 ha fire at Maletan (7 Aug) and a surface fire in the Plawangan Sembalun camp area (10 Aug); campfires are banned and cigarette butts are an enforcement issue
- ▲Active volcano (Barujari cone): eruptions have closed the park before; obey park and PVMBG alerts
The classic 3–4 day circuit: up from Sembalun to Plawangan Sembalun, summit push, descent to Danau Segara Anak, out over Plawangan Senaru. Sembalun and Senaru are two of the park's six official routes (Class 1 since 3 Nov 2025; foreigner ticket Rp250,000/day). Booking is legal only via the eRinjani app; the park runs daily quotas, QR check-in at the gates, and a public blacklist for violators. Park rules (published 12 Jun 2026): minimum group of 2 — solo climbing is banned; a guide or provably experienced climbing companion is mandatory; under-17s need a guardian and consent letter; the revised SOP (in force since the 11 Aug 2025 reopening) grades the route Class/Grade IV, sets guide ratios, and makes climber insurance mandatory. In practice foreign trekkers must book through a licensed trekking organizer with a certified guide — the narrow experienced-climber exemption still forbids going alone. No glacier or roped terrain: sturdy boots, poles, and warm layers for the pre-dawn summit scree are the equipment reality.
