Tromen Normal Route (summer)
✓ Verificada contra la agencia · APNSUMMER route only — winter Lanín is a different, technical route; the line shown is schematic, not a GPS track. Registration at the ranger station is mandatory and rangers check gear (crampons, ice axe, helmet) and may close the route. The standard summer ascent of Volcán Lanín from Paso Tromen. Register at the ranger station (1,200m), climb through lenga forest to CAJA shelter (2,400m), then RIM base camp (2,600m) and BIM (2,700m). Above BIM the terrain opens into volcanic scree. At 3,200m the Espina de Pescado rib forces a route choice: traverse left (longer, less wind-exposed) or climb direct (shorter, brutal in wind). Above 3,600m the crater rim is often in whiteout. Summit at 3,776m.

October to April only, with the safest window December to March (APN national tourism page). May to September is full winter: the summer route does not apply, avalanche terrain is active and APN mandates ARVA, shovel and probe for any activity on the north face. APN suspends or closes the ascent without notice when conditions or rescue operations require it — check with Guardaparques Tromen before starting.
- ▲Summit glacier and hard ice slopes above the refugios — crampon and ice-axe self-arrest terrain; APN requires proven ice-travel technique
- ▲Rapid weather deterioration and white-out at 3,776 m; conditions change between seasons and within the day (APN warns to check at the Centro de Informes/Seccional de Guardaparques before starting)
- ▲Altitude: 3,776 m gained in a 2-day/1-night itinerary with minimal acclimatization
- ▲Avalanche terrain on the north face outside high summer — ARVA, shovel and probe are mandatory in the winter period
- ▲Remoteness and rescue delay: APN's own notices document accidents and multi-day rescue operations on this route; VHF radio on the APN frequency is mandatory equipment (1 per 5 people)
This is glaciated volcano mountaineering, not a trek. The process is fixed by APN: free online registration in advance on the qsistemas.com.ar/lanin portal (linked from APN's own activities page), then an in-person gear check and experience evaluation by guardaparques at the Tromen Centro de Informes before you may start. A PNL-authorized guide is mandatory unless you demonstrate real ice-travel technique at that check — APN's protocol says 'SIN EXCEPCIÓN', and evasion is fined. Standard itinerary is 2 days/1 night sleeping at Refugio Militar Nuevo or Refugio CAJA. Crampons, ice axe, helmet and a VHF radio on the APN frequency are mandatory equipment; a -5°C bag and full layering are checked. Do not go May–September (winter avalanche protocol, route often closed) and assume APN can suspend the ascent at any time. Use only argentina.gob.ar and the qsistemas portal for current rules — the park's former domain pnlanin.org no longer serves park content. A daily quota is reported but no agency text confirming a number was found; treat portal reservation as capacity-limited.
