Aneto Normal Route
✓ Verificada contra la agencia · AEMET / MFThe standard route to the highest peak in the Pyrenees. From La Besurta (1,900m), the trail climbs to Refugio de la Renclusa (2,140m) — most parties spend the night here. Pre-dawn start for the summit: the Portillón Superior (3,050m) gives access to the Aneto glacier (crampons + ice axe mandatory), then the exposed Puente de Mahoma ridge (Paso de Mahoma) — a 30m knife-edge with 500m drops on both sides — leads to the summit cross at 3,404m. Not technical, but serious mountain conditions. The glacier is shrinking rapidly; consult current conditions.

Climbing season: roughly mid-June to early October, starting pre-dawn for firm snow. Late summer strips the glacier to bare ice — the Guardia Civil mountain rescue warning of 10 Jul 2026 says avoid the Portillon Superior variant (exposed ice, rockfall near Pico Coronas) and use the Ibon del Salterillo line. Not safe: any storm forecast, solo parties (minimum 3 people per Guardia Civil), and October to June, when it is a full winter-alpinism objective.
- ▲Mandatory Aneto glacier crossing: hard snow, bare ice, crevasses and the rimaya — most Aneto accidents involve glacier snow/ice (Montana Segura)
