Sliding Sands (Keoneheʻeheʻe)
Not yet safety-verifiedDescent from the Haleakalā summit visitor center into the volcanic crater on Maui. The trail drops 780m (2,560ft) over 4 miles through a surreal cinder desert landscape of red, orange, and silver volcanic cones. The crater floor contains three wilderness cabins (Hōlua, Kapalaoa, Palikū) available by NPS lottery. Altitude and sun exposure are the primary concerns — there is no shade or water on the descent. Can be combined with the Halemau'u Trail for a traverse.
