Most gear advice arrives as folklore: cotton kills, wool keeps you warm when wet, summit in B2s. Some of that folklore is anchored in real physics and some of it is not, and the only way to tell the difference is to trace each claim to an agency or club willing to put its name on it. That is what this guide does; where a popular claim failed verification, we say so and print the honest version.
The threat model: cold that kills above freezing
The layering system exists because mountain cold is not a thermometer reading. The US National Weather Service defines wind chill as "a 'feels like' temperature based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by the effects of wind and cold. As the wind increases, human and animal bodies are cooled at a faster rate."
The second half of the threat model is wetness. In the NWS's words, hypothermia "can also occur at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person become chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water." That is roughly 4°C — a temperature at which trekkers in summer rain routinely operate, convinced hypothermia is a winter problem.
The enemy is not low temperature alone; it is wind stripping heat from skin while moisture accelerates the loss. A clothing system for the mountains has exactly two jobs: manage moisture, and block wind. Warmth follows.

Three layers, in the agency's own words
The US National Park Service states the system plainly:
- Base layer. Inner layers "should be of materials that 'wick' moisture away from the skin."
- Mid layer. "Middle layers should insulate the body. They should also 'breathe' easily."
- Shell. "Outer layers should repel water and stop the wind to protect the wearer from convection heat loss and allow ventilation to minimize evaporative heat loss."
Note the shell definition: two heat-loss mechanisms, named. A shell that blocks rain but cannot vent simply moves the moisture problem inside the jacket.
The reason a system beats any single garment is in the NPS field version: "Dress in wicking layers, so that you can take off and add layers of clothing as needed." The mountain day alternates between hard uphill effort and windy, stationary cold — a single warm jacket is wrong for both halves. Layers let you shed insulation before you sweat and add it before you chill, which is moisture management by another name.

The cotton evidence, honestly stated
The famous slogan "cotton kills" appears verbatim on no official page we could verify, so we do not print it as a quote. What the agencies actually say is stronger, because it comes with a mechanism:
- NPS Kenai Fjords: "Choose wool or synthetic clothing and avoid cotton, which is useless as insulation once it gets wet."
- NPS Rocky Mountain: "Avoid clothing that will absorb and hold water, like cotton and jeans."
- Princeton Outdoor Action explains why: "Cotton… absorbs this moisture and the water occupies the space previously occupied by dead air. This means a loss in dead air space, high evaporative cooling, and a garment that is almost impossible to dry out."
- The physics underneath, from the same source: "Water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air."
Insulation is trapped dead air. Wet cotton replaces that air with water, and water is a heat conductor — the garment flips from insulator to radiator. That is why OSHA's cold-stress first-aid guidance is blunt: "Remove any wet clothing and replace with dry clothing."
Wool and synthetics (polypropylene, fleece) are the recommended alternatives because they preserve their dead-air structure and wick moisture rather than absorbing it. One honesty note: the popular figure that wool "retains X% of its insulation when wet" could not be traced to any verifiable official or peer-reviewed source — the qualitative claim is solid, the percentage is folklore, and we print only the former.

Extra clothes are a Ten Essential — and so is shelter
In Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills (9th edition), the Ten Essentials are ten systems, and two of them belong to this guide. Number ten is extra clothes — "sufficient to survive an emergency overnight." The test for what goes in your pack is not the day you planned; it is the unplanned night out.
Number seven is shelter, "carried at all times (can be a lightweight emergency bivy)" — even on day trips. The Mountaineers are specific about what qualifies: "Single-use bivy sacks made of heat-reflective polyethylene are an excellent option at less than 4 ounces. 'Emergency space blankets,' while cheap and lightweight, are inadequate to the task of keeping out wind, rain, or snow… A tent left behind in base camp is not enough." The NPS version of the same essential: "Tent, space blanket, tarp, or bivy… can protect you from severe weather conditions and exposure to the elements."
Read against the threat model above: the layering system keeps you alive while you move; the extra-clothes and shelter essentials keep it working when you stop.

What goes over the system: sun at altitude
The World Health Organization's numbers make high-mountain sun a different phenomenon from beach sun: UV increases "by approximately 10 per cent" with every 1,000 m of altitude, and fresh snow "almost doubles a person's UV exposure" — snow reflects up to 80% of UV, so it reaches you twice, from above and below. Hence the alpine convention of glacier-grade sunglasses (≥99% UVA/UVB protection, visible light transmission of 5-10% on snow) and SPF 30+ sunscreen carried as standard equipment, not vanity.

Sizing it for a hut trip: the one pack number with a source
A small scandal of gear writing: almost every pack-size chart you have seen ("20-30 L for day hikes, 50+ L for expeditions") traces to retailer copy, not to any club or agency we could verify. The one bracket that survives verification is the Austrian Alpenverein's official hut-tour packing list: "Rucksack (ca. 30-40 Liter) mit Regenhülle" — a 30-40 litre pack with a rain cover, for multi-day hut-to-hut trekking.
The rest of the ÖAV list is a useful audit of everything above:
- Hut sleeping-bag liner — required in Alpenverein huts.
- Headlamp. The Mountaineers explain why it is a headlamp and not a phone: "In the outdoors, headlamps are the flashlight of choice… Even if the party plans to return before dark, each member must carry a headlamp… An LED bulb lasts virtually forever but batteries do not, so always carry spares."
- First-aid kit with blister treatment. The NPS advice: "Start with a pre-made kit and modify it to fit your trip and your medical needs."
- Emergency bivy sack — the shelter essential, on the official list even for hut trips.
- Minimum 2 L of water capacity, and sun protection.
If your layering system plus that list does not fit in 30-40 litres, the problem is usually the gear, not the pack.

Footwear: the honesty box
Boot-buying vocabulary comes with a rating scheme, and it deserves an honest label before the table: the B0-B3 / C1-C3 system is a UK retail-trade convention that the national mountaineering bodies have adopted — Mountaineering Scotland says only that "a 'rating' system has been established, and all good outdoor retailers will use this system." It is not an ISO, EN or UIAA standard. It is still the most useful shared language for matching boots to crampons:

For via ferrata, the German Alpenverein adds two hard rules. First, "Am Klettersteig nur mit Helm!" — helmet always, and only a mountaineering helmet certified to EN 12492, against rockfall from parties above and head impact on rock; via ferrata sets must be norm-compliant (EN 958). Second, sneakers are out — "zu weicher Sohle," too soft a sole — because stiff soles are what stand on small holds. Separately, the UIAA maintains its own, stricter helmet standard: UIAA 106, current at its 4th edition (September 2025, effective January 2026).
