Trail maintenance status

Season: Open year-round. Do NOT descend below Skeleton Point (3 mi) May–Sept — inner-canyon shade temps exceed 43°C and there is no water or shade on this trail.

Season: Open year-round. Seasonal water at the resthouses and Havasupai Gardens — not guaranteed during 2026 waterline work; carry your own. Ice on the upper switchbacks in winter.

Season: North Rim road open ~mid-May to mid-Oct only. Foot-traffic only in 2026 (no stock). Active waterline construction between Cottonwood and Roaring Springs — water unreliable.

Season: Summer only, when conditions allow. NPS promises no snow-free window: the Keyhole Route 'can experience winter-like conditions at any time of the year', and for most of the year Longs Peak is in winter conditions requiring winter mountaineering experience and specialized equipment. In June, July and August expect afternoon thunderstorms and lightning — start pre-dawn to be descending before storms build, and be prepared to turn back during sudden, drastic weather changes. Read the current NPS Longs Peak conditions report before any attempt; outside settled summer conditions this is a winter mountaineering climb.

Season: May to early July. Outside it Denali is deadly: sub-arctic cold toward −40°C to −60°C, minimal daylight, effectively no rescue; late-season warming raises crevasse and serac hazard on the Kahiltna Glacier.

Season: Mid-May to mid-September via the free Savage River shuttle; private vehicles can reach the Mile 15 trailhead from late April until the first snow (roughly mid-April to early October). Outside that window the Park Road is snow-closed to vehicles and the trailhead is a 12-mile one-way ski or walk from Park Headquarters — do not plan this as a casual walk in winter.

Season: Open year-round. Safest May-Oct (steady tradewinds, occasional showers). Oct-May is unpredictable: widespread storms cause flash floods at the stream crossings and winter high surf strips Kalalau Beach and floods the sea caves people camp in. Do not hike the upper Hanakapi'ai Falls spur or the exposed Hanakoa-Kalalau section in wet weather. Status 2026-08-23: DLNR reopened overnight camping Sat 8/22 after Hurricane Lala / Tropical Storm Moke closures - check DLNR park notices before going.

Season: Normally open year-round; the safest conditions are the drier May-Oct months with an early start. Winter (roughly Nov-Apr) is the rainy season - NPS warns of increased fog and storms, and at 8,000-10,000 ft freezing temperatures, high wind and hypothermia conditions can occur any month. Status 2026-08-23: the entire Summit District is CLOSED for Tropical Cyclone Lala storm recovery (closed 8/14, major facility damage at 7,000-8,500 ft; NPS said closed through at least the weekend of 8/22-23) - confirm reopening on nps.gov/hale before planning.

Season: Open year round; prime season April–November (McAfee Knob trailhead shuttle runs March–November). Not safe: cliff edges at McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs in storms, high wind, or ice; the Dragon's Tooth rock scramble when wet or icy (late fall–winter); summer midday heat on dry ridgelines with no water on the Dragon's Tooth stretch.

Season: Open year round (USFS), no fee. Not safe when the rock is wet or icy: the upper scramble and the Tooth spire become serious fall hazards after rain and in winter ice. In summer carry all water — no natural sources in the Dragon's Tooth area — and start early; many hikers need 6+ hours.

Season: Late June to late September, while the Alpenverein huts (Hallerangerhaus, Pfeishütte) are staffed and the Hafelekar lift runs — the operator's stage pages show June–September as the window. Outside it, snow buries the Stempeljoch scree gully and the secured Goetheweg ledges; do not attempt the alpine stages then. The valley-side Zirbenweg stage alone is walkable longer.

Season: Roughly late June to late September, while the eight ÖAV/DAV huts are staffed — the operator's tour pages show June–September as the optimal window and warn huts book out early. Before the huts open and after they close the trail is snowbound and unsupported: not safe. Snowfields persist on the high crossings into July.

Season: Summer only, roughly mid-June to September. Early season (snow covering the glacier) the agency directs you via the Portillón Superior; once bare ice appears — 30 Jun in 2022, 5 Jul in 2023 per Montaña Segura's annual advisory — it redirects to the Salterillo variant. Not safe: outside summer, on storm days, or on bare glacier ice without alpine competence; ice axe and crampons are needed almost year-round.

The agency's recommended summer line, especially once the glacier's snow cover has melted and ice is exposed (typically from late June/early July through September; the switch date is published each year by Montaña Segura). In early season with snow on the glacier, the Portillón Superior line is preferred instead. Not safe: winter/spring, storm days, or without ice axe and crampons — required 'casi todo el año'.

Season: Mid-June to October (Jungfrau Region lists Jun-Oct as the season). Not safe outside that window: the trail is snow-covered and unmarked in winter, and snow lies late below the north face, so check Jungfrau Railways trail status before any June or late-October trip.

Season: July to late September for the full Bernese section. Switzerland Tourism lists June-September for the Hohtuerli stage (13) and May-September for the Kleine Scheidegg stage (11); the 2612 m Sefinenfurgge and 2778 m Hohtuerli passes carry snowfields into early July and can get fresh snow from late September. Outside the window the passes are snowbound — do not attempt.

Season: Summer glacier raid: the Chamonix official listing runs it only mid-June to mid-July (15/06-15/07), daily, 'subject to favorable weather'; later in summer crevasses open. The ski version runs roughly January-April (zermatt.swiss) and demands full avalanche kit. There is no season in which this is a walking route, and no season in which unguided travel without glacier equipment is appropriate.

Season: Late June to late September, when huts operate and the high passes are clear of snow. Early summer snowfields obscure waymarks and hide collapsing snow bridges; October to June the passes are snowbound and the route is not viable. Season: Late June to mid-Sept, when passes are largely snow-free and the rifugi are open and staffed. Outside this window huts close, high passes hold snow and ice, and it becomes a serious winter undertaking.

Season: Late June to mid-Sept. Early summer leaves snow in the gullies and on the Marmolada glacier; outside the window the via ferrata and glacier sections are unsafe and the huts are shut.

Season: April–November per the official route listing. Valley-floor path, 8 km, 161 m ascent, ~2 h. Trümmelbach Falls open early April–early November only (9:00–17:00; Jul/Aug 8:30–18:00); the Staubbach Falls gallery is open May–October and closed in winter because of icefall. In winter the valley path can be icy and both waterfall galleries are shut — do not plan the full itinerary November–March. After storms the route can be blocked; check with the local information centre.

Season: Boats on Lake Brienz run 3 April–6 December 2026 (frequent sailings 23 May–11 October; sparse low-season timetable outside that). The Giessbach funicular runs April–October, then mid-October–early December weekends only. Mid-December–March there is no boat service and the falls paths can be icy — do not plan this itinerary in winter. Falls are most powerful (and paths wettest) during snowmelt and after heavy rain.

Season: Great Walk season 1 Nov–30 Apr (2026/27: 1 Nov 2026–30 Apr 2027, last departure 28 Apr). In season a non-technical booked-hut walk. Off-season (1 May–31 Oct) it is a serious alpine undertaking: snow, ice, short daylight, 57+ avalanche paths and unbridged flooding streams — ice axe, crampons and alpine skills required.

Season: Great Walk season 1 Nov–30 Apr. In season a non-technical 2–4 day booked-hut walk. Off-season (1 May–late Oct) it is an alpine route: 32+ avalanche paths, snow and ice on the Hollyford Face and Harris Saddle, bridges removed — ice axe, crampons and avalanche gear required.

Season: Climbing season: roughly mid-June to early October, starting pre-dawn for firm snow. Late summer strips the glacier to bare ice — the Guardia Civil mountain rescue warning of 10 Jul 2026 says avoid the Portillon Superior variant (exposed ice, rockfall near Pico Coronas) and use the Ibon del Salterillo line. Not safe: any storm forecast, solo parties (minimum 3 people per Guardia Civil), and October to June, when it is a full winter-alpinism objective.

Season: Safe window: roughly June to October, when the valley trail is snow-free; in peak periods (Holy Week and summer) the park bans private cars beyond Torla and runs a shuttle bus to the Pradera every 15-20 minutes. Not safe: November to May, when snow and ice sit on the upper valley and the Soaso steps — that is winter-gear terrain, not this classification.

Season: Summit window mid-Nov to end Feb (park summer season 1 Nov–30 Apr; peak Dec–Feb). Outside it the upper mountain is deadly: extreme cold, deep snow, hurricane-force wind, no active camps or rescue. Mendoza requires a licensed prestador/guide in the shoulder weeks (15–30 Nov, 16–28 Feb).
