Ladakh is a high desert on the wrong side of the Himalaya, where the monsoon never arrives. Monks cut monasteries into these cliffs six hundred years ago and still live in them. At Phuktal, built into the mouth of a cave in Zanskar, a Hungarian scholar sat down in 1826 and compiled the first English-Tibetan dictionary.
