Planning

The Plan

Personal planning notes — routes, gear, logistics, budget math.

Route & Trek Options

What we're considering

  • Everest Base Camp — The classic. 12-14 days, peaks at 5,364m. Flies into Lukla.
  • Annapurna Circuit — 15-20 days, crosses Thorong La pass at 5,416m. More varied terrain.
  • Annapurna Base Camp — Shorter, 7-10 days, tops at 4,130m. Good if time is tight.
  • Langtang Valley — Less crowded, 7-10 days. Close to Kathmandu. Rebuilt after 2015 earthquake.
  • Three Passes Trek — The hard one. 18-20 days, three 5,000m+ passes. Everest region but wilder.

Decision factors

  • How many days do we have?
  • Altitude experience (Domuyo at 4,709m is our current max)
  • Budget — permits, guides, porters, tea houses vs camping
  • Season — October-November is peak, March-April is second window

TBD

  • Confirm dates
  • Talk to agencies in Kathmandu vs booking from Argentina
  • Visa requirements (on arrival for most nationalities)

Gear List

Already have

  • Mountaineering boots (tested to 5,000m on Domuyo)
  • Base layers (merino)
  • Trekking poles
  • 50L pack
  • Headlamp

Need to get

  • Down jacket rated to -20C (the Andes gear isn't warm enough for 5,000m+ Nepal nights)
  • Sleeping bag rated to -15C (most tea houses have blankets but you can't count on it)
  • Water purification (Steripen or Sawyer)
  • Altitude medication (Diamox — consult doctor)
  • Trekking insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage
  • Nepal power adapter

Nice to have

  • GoPro or action camera for vlogs
  • Portable charger (10,000mAh minimum, lodges charge for electricity)
  • Satellite communicator (Garmin inReach)

Logistics & Budget

Flights

  • Buenos Aires → Kathmandu (no direct — likely via Doha, Dubai, or Istanbul)
  • Kathmandu → Lukla (if EBC) — domestic flight, weather-dependent, book early
  • Budget: ~$1,200-1,800 USD round trip international

Permits

  • TIMS card (Trekkers Information Management System) — ~$20
  • National park entry — $30 (Sagarmatha for EBC, Annapurna Conservation for AC)
  • Visa — On arrival at Kathmandu airport, $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days

Daily costs on trek

  • Tea house accommodation: $5-15/night
  • Food: $15-25/day
  • Guide: $25-35/day
  • Porter: $15-25/day

Total estimate

  • 2 weeks trekking + 3-4 days Kathmandu
  • Rough estimate: $3,000-4,500 USD all-in per person
