DOC charges different rates for NZ residents vs international visitors. Milford Track has the largest gap: NZ$106 vs NZ$152/night.

Food (4 days)

No food is sold at DOC huts. You carry everything. This is not Europe — no rifugio dinners, no teahouse menus.

Town accommodation (3 nights)

Rental car

A rental car is effectively essential for most Great Walk trailheads. The Kepler Track (Te Anau) is the only exception — walkable from town.

Reality check

Self-catering model. DOC huts do not sell food. You carry everything — stove, fuel, meals for every day. Pack weight is 12-18 kg vs 6-8 kg for a European hut-to-hut trek where half-board is included. Budget accordingly for food prep and weight.

International Visitor Levy

The IVL increased to NZ$100 (from NZ$35) — nearly 3x. Charged at the border via NZeTA. Separate from DOC fees.

Sources

Every number in this calculator is traceable to a primary source. No affiliate links. No commissions from guided walk operators.

Methodology: DOC hut fees are published rates from doc.govt.nz for the 2025/26 Great Walk season (NZD, including GST). Resident vs international pricing is verified from the DOC booking system. Transport costs are estimates based on published shuttle and bus fares. Food costs assume self-catering from supermarket purchases in Te Anau or Queenstown. Town accommodation rates are from Booking.com and Hostelworld for Te Anau and Queenstown properties. The IVL (NZ$100) applies to all international visitors via the NZeTA system. Five Great Walks have 5-15% price increases announced for 2026/27. The calculator does not include: adventure activities, alcohol, souvenirs, or tips.
