The 1959 eruption created a 400-foot lava fountain here — the highest ever recorded in Hawaii. The trail crosses the still-warm crater floor where steam vents hiss through cracks in the lava. 4-mile loop. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park entrance fee $30/vehicle. Near Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku).
