Three ranges of granite and volcanic peaks run down the spine of Honshū, and a British mining engineer christened them the Japanese Alps in the 1880s. A missionary named Walter Weston spent fifteen years walking them and published a book in 1896 that made the world take notice. Japan gave him an imperial honour for it in 1937.
