The tourist calendar and the survival calendar point in opposite directions. Summer draws the biggest crowds to Arches and Canyonlands, yet July averages about 97F, the slickrock has no shade, and rangers logged 23 heat rescues by early August 2026. July and August also bring monsoon storms that fill washes and slot canyons in minutes. The real windows are spring and late-September-to-October, and the standard advice to hike late in the day to beat the crowds is exactly backwards in the heat.

On 18 February 2026 the National Park Service killed the Arches timed-entry reservation system that nearly every English guide still tells you to book. Rangers logged 23 heat rescues across Arches and Canyonlands by early August 2026; at least five people died at Arches in 2023. The trails are short, but the desert is the danger, and 'hike late to beat the crowds' is exactly backwards in July. A quieter 2026 change works in your favor: the new $100 foreign-visitor surcharge hit Zion and Grand Canyon but skipped these two parks, so you pay the same $30 per vehicle as a resident.
