Denali Park Road
✓ Verified against the agency · NPSThe single 148-km road through Denali National Park. Private vehicles allowed only to Mile 15 (Savage River); beyond that, transit and tour buses run when the road is open. Since 2021, the Pretty Rocks landslide at Mile 43.5 has closed the road — Wonder Lake, Eielson Visitor Center, and the iconic Denali viewpoints beyond Mile 43 are inaccessible by road. NPS is evaluating a permanent bridge solution but no reopening date has been announced.
Safety classification
Summer season May 20 through mid-September. Private vehicles: Mile 15 (Savage River) only once buses run. Buses: only to Mile 43 (East Fork Bridge) — the road is CLOSED beyond Mile 43 at the Pretty Rocks landslide (Mile 45.4) through summer 2026; Eielson Visitor Center and Wonder Lake are unreachable by road. Winter: snow-closed to vehicles. NPS has announced no reopening date — do not plan travel beyond Mile 43 in any season until NPS publishes one.
- ▲Pretty Rocks landslide (Mile 45.4): road physically severed and closed beyond Mile 43 since August 2021 — do not plan travel past East Fork in 2026
- ▲Bus and vehicle traffic on a narrow gravel road with drop-offs for anyone walking or cycling it
- ▲Grizzly bears and moose along the entire corridor; walkers and cyclists must be bear-aware and self-sufficient
- ▲No services, water, or cell coverage beyond the entrance area
- ▲Rapid weather changes, wind, and cold at higher road elevations
This is a road and bus corridor, not a trail — nearly all visitors travel it by transit/tour bus or drive the paved first 15 miles. Walking or cycling beyond Savage River is permitted but is a self-sufficient outing in bear country, not a maintained hiking route. In 2026 the corridor ends at Mile 43 (East Fork); the bridge over the Pretty Rocks slide was lowered into place in September 2025, but NPS has announced no reopening date — verify current NPS conditions before planning past Mile 43 in any season.
