Safety classification
Mid-May to mid-September via the free Savage River shuttle; private vehicles can reach the Mile 15 trailhead from late April until the first snow (roughly mid-April to early October). Outside that window the Park Road is snow-closed to vehicles and the trailhead is a 12-mile one-way ski or walk from Park Headquarters — do not plan this as a casual walk in winter.
- ▲Fatal falls: canyon sides are steep with uncertain footing — NPS states people have been injured or died falling while scrambling off-trail here
- ▲Grizzly bears and moose frequent the area; carry bear awareness, keep distance
- ▲Severe wind and sudden cold rain; the area sits several hundred feet higher than the park entrance
- ▲Trail narrows to under 18 inches with loose gravel and large rocks after the first quarter mile
- ▲No cell service, water, or food at the trailhead; limited parking
A ~2-mile riverside loop with negligible elevation change — the first quarter mile is 48-inch compacted gravel, then the tread narrows to loose gravel. Stay on the trail: the deaths NPS records here happened off-trail on the steep canyon sides. Watch the shuttle schedule for your return; wear layers for wind.
