Belfast Trail — Devils Marbleyard
✓ Verified against the agency · NPSThe James River Face outlier, 40 miles up the Blue Ridge from the Triple Crown — a short, steep walk into Virginia's oldest designated wilderness that ends at its strangest sight. From the Belfast trailhead on Petites Gap Road (~305m) the trail crosses Elk Creek past the stone pillars of the 1920s Camp Powhatan and climbs the Belfast Creek hollow into the James River Face Wilderness. At ~1.4 miles the forest simply stops: Devils Marbleyard, an eight-acre river of white antietam-quartzite blocks — car-sized and larger — pouring 500 vertical feet down the flank of the ridge at around 2,000ft. Hikers scramble straight up the boulders (grippy rock, real route-finding) or continue on the trail along its edge; from the top of the field the James River gorge and Arnold Valley spread below. Legend blames a cursed missionary camp; geology answers with a frost-shattered Cambrian sea floor.
Safety classification
Open year round (USFS), no fee. Not safe: the Marbleyard boulders when wet or icy — stay off the rock slide after rain and in winter; the open 8-acre rock field bakes in summer midday heat and the trail has no drinking water. Best in dry, cool conditions.
- ▲The Devil's Marbleyard rock slide — 8 acres of large boulders; scrambling on them risks falls and trapped limbs, and rescue is slow inside the wilderness
- ▲Boulders become skating rink slick when wet or icy
- ▲Unblazed trail (USFS lists 'Blazes: None') inside James River Face Wilderness — navigation errors, no cell coverage
- ▲No drinking water on the trail; purify any creek water
USFS Forest Trail #9, Glenwood & Pedlar Ranger Districts, George Washington & Jefferson NF. 2.3 mi one way, climbing 1,000 ft to 2,517 ft (~1,500 ft gain) — USFS rates it 'Moderate to Difficult'; classified strenuous for the sustained steep grade and the hands-on boulder field at the destination. Scrambling up the Marbleyard is optional — the trail passes alongside it. Wilderness rules: max group 10, no saddle/pack/draft animals (Forest Supervisor's Order), foot travel only. Trailhead parking on VA 781 (Petites Gap Rd) fits about five compact cars.
