Virginia Triple Crown — AT section
✓ Verified against the agency · NPSThe Appalachian Trail's most famous mile-for-mile stretch — the corridor that strings together McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs, two-thirds of Virginia's 'Triple Crown'. From the VA 311 trailhead (~545m) the white-blazed AT crosses the new pedestrian bridge over the highway (opened March 2025, ending decades of hikers sprinting across a blind crest) and climbs Catawba Mountain past the Johns Spring and Catawba Mountain shelters to McAfee Knob at 974m — the overhanging diving-board ledge that is the most-photographed spot on the entire 2,190-mile AT, with a 270° panorama over the Catawba Valley, Tinker Cliffs and North Mountain. The trail then drops past the Pig Farm Campsite and Campbell Shelter and runs the ridge of Tinker Mountain north for 8km to Tinker Cliffs, a half-mile of sheer Tuscarora-sandstone rim walking at ~914m where the AT follows the very edge. Day hikers do the Knob and turn around; strong parties push the full section; backpackers close the 35-mile Triple Crown loop (with Dragon's Tooth) over 2–3 days. No permits, no fees — but the Knob at sunrise is a pilgrimage, and the parking pressure on VA 311 is real.
Safety classification
Open year round; prime season April–November (McAfee Knob trailhead shuttle runs March–November). Not safe: cliff edges at McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs in storms, high wind, or ice; the Dragon's Tooth rock scramble when wet or icy (late fall–winter); summer midday heat on dry ridgelines with no water on the Dragon's Tooth stretch.
- ▲Unfenced cliff edges at McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs — fatal fall exposure, worst in wind, storms, and ice
- ▲Hands-and-feet rock scramble on the AT over the Dragon's Tooth section — treacherous when wet or icy
- ▲Food-conditioned black bears at Catawba Mountain Shelter, Campbell Shelter, and Pig Farm Campsite — ATC standing warning (June 2026); bear canister strongly recommended, store all food and trash
- ▲No natural water sources along the A.T. in the Dragon's Tooth area — carry all water
- ▲Exposed ledges in afternoon thunderstorms — lightning risk
The AT segment linking Dragon's Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs between VA 620 (Trout Creek) and VA 652, jointly managed by NPS, ATC, Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, and USFS under the 2024 Visitor Use Management Plan; RATC maintains the trail and shelters. Typically 2–3 days; each summit is also a strenuous stand-alone day hike. Camping rules differ by zone: dispersed camping allowed south of VA 624 (Jefferson NF, except the Dragon's Tooth Special Biological Area); north of VA 624 (NPS land) camping ONLY at 7 designated sites — none on McAfee Knob or Tinker Cliffs, fires only in metal rings. Group limits: 25 day / 10 overnight. ~60,000 visitors/year; VA 311 parking fills, illegally parked cars are towed — use the shuttle or go midweek. Traction = seasonal microspikes/poles for winter ice on the scramble and ledges.
