Yellowstone's usable hiking season is short and back-loaded. High passes and river fords stay snowed in or dangerous into mid-to-late July, so the big backcountry routes don't open when the crowds do. July draws roughly 975,000 visitors, afternoon storms, and a HIGH fire-danger rating, yet the backcountry stays nearly empty. September is the honest sweet spot; in winter most roads close to cars and the park goes oversnow-only. Foreign visitors also now pay a $100 surcharge per person as of January 1, 2026.

Yellowstone draws more than four million visitors a year, yet only about 20,000 ever draw a backcountry permit and fewer than 5% walk even a quarter-mile from the pavement. The crowds are real. The empty wilderness is real. The line between them is roughly one mile of trail. And the danger here is inverted: the killing ground is flat, developed, and 50 yards from the car, not high and technical. One 2026 fact most guides still miss — non-U.S. visitors now pay a $100 surcharge on top of entry.
