Chamonix / Tour du Mont Blanc
Chamonix sits directly beneath Mont Blanc, just over 4,800 metres and the highest mountain in western Europe. The Tour du Mont Blanc circles the massif through France, Italy and Switzerland — about 170 kilometres, seven to eleven days. In 1760 a naturalist from Geneva offered money to anyone who could find a way to the top. It took twenty-six years, and a village doctor and a crystal hunter collected.
