Yellowstone
Yellowstone sits on a supervolcano, and the geysers, hot springs and mud pots are what that looks like from above. It became the first national park anywhere on 1 March 1872, after a government survey came back with photographs and paintings Congress could barely believe. It was created with nobody to run it: the National Park Service would not exist for another forty-four years.
