Trek Virginia Appalachians

Halfway up the Arnold Valley, the forest stops and an 8-acre river of white quartzite blocks — 'suitcases to vans' — pours down the flank of the James River Face. The rock is Antietam quartzite, a ~500-million-year-old quartz beach compressed into one of the hardest metamorphic rocks there is; the wreckage is ice-age frost wedging, because Virginia was never glaciated — this is what near-glacial cold does to a mountain instead. The approach is the blue-blazed Belfast Trail past a ruined Boy Scout camp; the lot holds ~8 cars; the scramble is unmarked, ankle-eating and strictly fair-weather. And every odd thing about the place — no signs, few blazes, no fees — is the 1975 Wilderness designation working exactly as written.

McAfee Knob gets the photographs and roughly 60,000 visitors a year. The other two jewels of Virginia's Triple Crown are better hikes by almost every technical measure — Dragon's Tooth is a 4.8-mile day ending in an iron-rung scramble to a 35-ft quartzite spire, and Tinker Cliffs is a half-mile walk along a cliff edge reached through cow pastures on the Andy Layne Trail.
