Flash flood danger
45+ drowning deaths along the Kalalau corridor. Water is the primary danger on Hawaiian trails — not falls, not heat. Stream crossings become impassable within minutes of upstream rain. Never cross a swollen stream. Check weather before every hike.
Active eruption
Kīlauea Episode 46 active since May 4, 2026. Check USGS HVO alerts before visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Trail closures and vog (volcanic fog) conditions change daily.
Maui accommodation
7,000 short-term rentals being eliminated by 2031. Maui County is phasing out non-resort STRs in residential areas. Accommodation supply is shrinking and prices are rising. Book early if visiting Maui.
