Chorrillo del Salto — the wind-day and rest-day hike in El Chaltén
A 6.6 km round trip to a 20 m waterfall through lenga and ñire forest. Minimal elevation gain, fully sheltered from wind, and the correct trail for an arrival day, a weather pause, or a recovery day mid-trip. Not the main event — but the most useful complement to one.
Lago del Desierto → Villa O'Higgins — the overland crossing the travel press keeps romanticizing and hikers keep missing flights over
The only overland connection between El Chaltén and the southern end of the Carretera Austral. Five legs, two countries, two boat operators, and a 22 km walk through terrain a Chilean Carabinero was shot dead in sixty years ago. Still running in 2026 — but build a weather buffer, or don't start.
El Chaltén is not a wilderness. It's a climbing-town basecamp — and the free-access regime just ended.
